Affectionately nicknamed the “Granite Lady,” the second San Francisco Mint has stood its ground through the City’s many transformations and disasters, including the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Between 1874 and 1937, it was the most active mint in the United States. In 1877, over fifty million dollars in coins were produced. By the 1930s, one-third of the nation’s gold reserves were stored there.
