The South has always been known for demure brides, yummy fried food and refreshing cocktails and we’ve been seeing a trend where couples want to bring a taste of the South here to the Bay Area. The most common catering requests are for passed hors d’oeuvres such as Smoked Tomato, Okra and White Cheddar Hush Puppies with Mustard Cream, Crispy Fried Chicken atop a Buttermilk Waffle Bite, Sausage Gravy and Maple Syrup and Deviled Eggs. For desserts we’ve been doing traditional beignets and our pastry chef James McCann has also been getting creative with marmalade dipping sauces. With sugar on the brain, one of our favorite Southern catering trends we’ve been seeing is the “Grooms Cake” where our brides have been surprising their grooms with a fun, playful groom’s cake that represents them. Just this last weekend our bride surprised her groom with a two-layer Star Wars “May the Force Be With You” theme cake. Our own Wedding Sales Manager, Jessica Haro also recently surprised her husband with a Lakers jersey cake (his favorite sports team.)If you want to incorporate a little South into your wedding menu and take a bite out of this fun tradition, think about something your soon-to-be husband enjoys, such as golfing or hunting. Is he a huge sports fan? Have a cake made into a jersey of his favorite team with his name on it. If he loves barbeque, have a cake made into a big hamburger, or perhaps his favorite beer. Is he a tech junkie that is attached to his iPhone, or is he obsessed with a certain movie or TV show? Think of something fun, playful and meaningful that will show him you thought of him (it ishis day too after all!) and the rest of your guests how much you know him. Here are some examples we’ve found on Pinterest for some added inspiration.
